What is Healing Touch?

Healing Touch is an an energy-based approach to health and healing.  During a session, practitioners use their hands in a heart-centered and intentional way to support and facilitate physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health.

Healing Touch influences the human energy system, specifically the energy field that surrounds the body, and the energy centers that control the flow from the energy field to the physical body.  It helps to release tension and emotional blocks that have the potential to develop into a form of physical illness or pain if not addressed. Once physical or emotional issues manifest, Healing Touch can also help alleviate some of the symptoms and improve the healing process.  As a holistic therapy, Healing Touch treats the whole person, not just the symptoms. The goal of Healing Touch is to restore balance and harmony in the energy system, placing the client in a position to self heal. These non-invasive techniques facilitate clearing, energizing, and balancing the human and environmental energy fields, thus affecting physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health.

Because of the positive results seen from Healing Touch work, many hospitals have begun incorporating it as part of their Integrative Medicine program and it is also being incorporated into residents Plan of Care in Long Term Care facilities.

How Does it Work?

Many theoretical frameworks on how energy medicine works exist in the literature of quantum physics and holistic healing. However, while the exact physics mechanisms can not be definitively described at this time, the cumulative results of numerous related studies on energy medicine and consciousness indicate strong support that recipients respond positively to energy therapies such as Healing Touch.

Over the years, researchers have developed ways to measure the energy field. Theoretically, by correcting any defects in the energy field, energy therapy practices may facilitate healing of the body, mind and spirit.

Energy therapies focus on removing energy congestion that form in our energy fields (aura) and energy centers (chakras). Once these imbalances and disturbances are cleared, the energy channels resume their task of integrating the body, mind and soul to restore health and promote healing. It may also help to prevent future issues by restoring balance to energy field disturbances, which could later result in illness if left unbalanced.

To gain a deeper understanding of the science supporting energy healing, we recommend referring to the many books, journal articles and research findings written on this subject. Scientific evidence does exist that supports the premise that energy healing is effective.   In addition, receiving a Healing Touch treatment can do more to bridge the understanding and experience of the power of this healing modality.

Benefits of Healing Touch

Energy precedes thought and thought precedes form.

Healing Touch Accessibility

Not only can Healing Touch support healing and wellness, it also is much more accessible to the general population because of the type of techniques used as well as today’s financial healthcare concerns.  The ease of access to Healing Touch is driven by:

• Non-Invasive – Healing Touch is performed without the use of invasive techniques, such as needles, surgery, or medication.  This means no unwanted or risky side effects from medication.  Permission is always granted to the practitioner from the client prior to any gentle hands on contact, and hands off techniques may be used if the client prefers no physical contact.

• Economical – Healing Touch does not require expensive medications, devices or equipment.  Only a well-trained practitioner is needed to facilitate the restoring of energetic flow in the client.

• Effective – Research shows that Healing Touch benefits the healing process for a myriad of conditions as well as facilitates a relaxation response. (Experts estimate that upwards of 90% of disease is stress-related.)

Healing Touch Can Help many conditions, including but not limited to:

• Decrease anxiety

• Increase circulation

• Improve energy

• Enhance sleep quality

• Reduce fatigue

• Strengthen the immune system

• Reduce negative side effects of medications

What Does a Session Look Like?

During a Healing Touch session, the client remains fully clothed and depending on the setting, will lie comfortably on a massage table, sit in a chair, or in some situations may be lying in bed.  During the initial session, the practitioner will complete an Intake to understand client health issues, current concerns and client goals.  During all sessions, the Practitioner will start with an assessment of the client’s energy centers and fields and then initiate treatment, which will involve the practitioner placing his/her hands gently on or slightly above the specific area of the client’s body to facilitate a change in the flow of energy.  A session is typically a very relaxing experience for the client and lasts anywhere from 15-60 minutes.

Practitioner Education

Training to become a Healing Touch Certified Practitioners (HCTP) includes approximately 100 hours of classroom training to go through 5 levels.  In addition, approximately 300 additional training hours are spent incorporating practice time with clients as well as research, study, and deepening the understanding of the knowledge required to be a qualified Healing Touch Practitioner.  Practitioners also need to pass a certification exam to receive certified status.

The HTCP credential is the first Energy Medicine profession to achieve accreditation through the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), the accrediting body of the Institute for Credentialing Excellence (ICE). Accreditation is a process in which an official body gives authority to confirm that specific standards have been met for professional competency.  NCCA’s mission is to ensure the health, welfare and safety of the public through the accreditation of certification programs.

For the accreditation process for HTCP specifically, credential approval included administrative procedures, job analysis, test development, test security, standard setting, eligibility criteria, board responsibility, ongoing review of all policies and procedures, and verification of reliability and validity of the credential.

NCAA has also accredited programs including, but not limited to, the American Nurses Credentialing Center, American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, National Board for Certification of Hospice and Palliative Services, Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation, National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants, and many more.
